Research the leaders in the areas of expertise that you would like to become skilled in. When you approach them to “Mantor” you, make sure you can demonstrate what you have already done to become educated and skillful in their area of expertise. Make sure you have read the books, listened to audio programs and have implemented what you have been learning. This will demonstrate you are a serious student. You may not be able to meet, face to face with them due to geographical limitations. However, the experts in their field may be reached through the wonders of technology. You could chat with them through email, phone or Skype. Why not read their books or invest in one of their education programs?

OFFER TO PAY THEM FOR AN HOUR OF THEIR TIME

This shows you are serious about your development and you respect their time. They may just be that “rich guy”, you get to buy dinner for that we referred to in the Chief Financial Officer Mandatory  Missions.

Ask lots of questions. Take notes and if you are out to dinner, eat very slowly…you will learn more.

PRESENT YOURSELF LIKE YOU ARE ALREADY SUCCESSFUL

Remember to take extra care of your personal presentation. It shows that you have discipline, self respect and take pride in your appearance or what we call the “shop front” of YOU Pty Ltd. The second rule of marketing is “perception is everything.” One of the easiest ways to create the perception of being a successful disciplined and organized man is to take pride in the presentation of your Man Brand and your shop front. It’s the first thing people see and sends a strong message about who you are.

ASK INTELLIGENT QUESTIONS AND LISTEN

Plan some great questions relating to how your Mantor became successful. Ask about his biggest lessons in life and what advice he would give someone like you who would like to become as successful as him. Then shut up and listen. Take a journal with you and ask if it is ok if you take notes or use the voice record feature on your phone as he shares his wisdom. This demonstrates that you are a serious student, that you have manners and aren’t a muppet.

If you may have read or heard something different to what is shared do not disagree or argue with your Mantor. Put the notes in your journal and review them at a later date. You do not have to do everything they share with you. The goal here is to listen to what they have to share and be a student of their teachings…not a follower. Once you have gathered the information then you make the decision on what to use and what to leave on the shelf.

FOLLOW UP WITH A THANK YOU AND AN ACTION PLAN

Once you have secured time with your “Mantor” through their good will, or you have invested financially in their time or you bribed them with a tasty meal, follow them up with a thank you call and gift. Email  them your summary of the key points and the action plan you intend to follow, complete with deadlines. Aim to book them in for a follow up “Mantoring session”. Plan to see them again once you have progressed in your development, implemented some of their suggestions. Have some results to share that will show you are not a “waste of time”.

As Head of Product Development and Research and Design you have some big responsibilities to deliver on including setting great personal and professional development goals and educating yourself on the best way to achieve them. Remember, you can always call in the Human Resources team to help you surround yourself with others who can assist you. We also suggest doing your own research to find “Mantors” who are successful in the areas you want to develop. Follow the above tips we have just provided to recruit them onto your team of advisors to assist you in the business of designing a Mantastic Life.

By committing to a well thought out action plan for each of the internal goals you have set and evaluating your progress regularly you are well on your way to a bright future as the Head of Product Development and Branding.
